Renaldo Benson was born on June 14, 1937, and died on July 1, 2005. In addition to the Four Tops, he also co wrote “What’s Going On” for Marvin Gaye. He attended high school in Michigan with classmate Lawrence Payton. They formed The Four Aims, which became The Four Tops. After the death of Payton in 1997, the lineup finally changed. Benson still toured with them quite frequently. On July 1, 2005, he died of lung cancer. He is buried in Detroit, and is survived by two daughters.
